Canadian Oil Sands: Canada - An Emerging Energy Superpower

Canadians continue to be interested and engaged in a discussion of Canada’s energy future, and the role of crude oil in that future. In recent months, discussions of pipeline projects have pushed the importance of access to a variety markets for Canadian oil, and the benefits of eastern access to the local economy to the forefront in British Columbia. As Canada moves forward developing this resource, we must continue to work to achieve the balance between economic contribution, environmental sustainability and energy security.

Since Don Thompson started his career in the oil sands 33 years ago, there have been many advancements in technology which have moved the oil sands from a curiosity to a cornerstone of energy security and the economy. The oil sands will make this significant contribution by creating supply chain and employment opportunities across the continent in addition to direct employment within the industry. Through his presentation, Don Thompson presents balanced perspective on the oil sands, highlighting the challenges the industry faces and demonstrating the actions being taken to address them.
